Mark Nakhla arrived from Egypt to study Tomato yellow leaf curl virus and he stayed for over 14 years working with Douglas Maxwell and Amy Charkowski. He studied geminiviruses from tomatoes in Central America, helped with experiments with gene silencing in tomatoes, presented many workshops (Jamaica, Guatemala, Morocco, Egypt) and most of all he assisted in training visiting scientist from many countries on the use of PCR and hybridization methods. He also assisted with the laboratories in introductory Plant Pathology and eventually managed the laboratories for this course. He was a very popular instuctor.
